Leicestershire has most temps in the East Midlands, says GMB
Leicestershire has the highest number of temporary workers in the East Midlands, according to figures.
Temps make up 15,500 - or 5.9 per cent - of the county’s workforce, the GMB union has found. Leicester has 12,900 agency staff, or seven per cent of those in employment, while Rutland has 400, which is 2.7 per cent.
Overall, there are 101,300 temps in the East Midlands, representing 5.2 per cent of employees in the region.
The figures came from an analysis of the workplace by the GMB to coincide with European Union legislation, which gives temps the same employment rights as permanent staff.
The rights are set to become law by 2012.

Managers told to hold their nerve
Leicestershire companies have been warned that a knee-jerk reaction to the credit crunch could badly damage their long-term prospects.Ian Borley, senior partner at KPMG, in Leicester, said businesses must learn to be nimble, while at the same time reducing costs and increasing cashflow.
It comes after KPMG’s national quarterly business confidence survey found more than half of businesses plan to reduce staff numbers over the coming months, with a similar number set to introduce recruitment freezes.
“While the region’s businesses have remained confident since the credit crunch struck, it now appears we are all in it together and the market is starting to feel the subsequent impact of both the turmoil on the global markets and rising inflation,” said Mr Borley.
“However, it is vital that managers hold their nerve and ensure businesses remain resilient - a knee-jerk reaction could prove disastrous.
“It is one thing to adopt a strategy that will enable you to continue to seek opportunities and grow, and quite another to go round slashing costs just to stand still.
“Managers need to keep one eye on cashflow and cost reduction, while the other should be on seeking out new opportunities - either by developing products or by tapping into new markets.”
Mr Borley said one option for businesses was to look at opportunities in Europe, because the strength of the euro against the pound made UK exports more attractive.

Employers value soft skills over academic results finds research.
Employers value qualities such as team working, good communication skills and the ability to appreciate others’ perspectives above academic qualifications a new study by GRADdirect, has revealed.
The study examined what organisations look for from their graduates and the factors that influence whether a graduate succeeds or fails and found that over half of the organisations surveyed stated that graduate recruitment was key to building a greater pool of candidates available for succession planning and promotion.
Other important findings included: characteristics related to emotional intelligence, such as the ability to appreciate others’ perspectives are seen as highly important to 42 per cent of organisations.
Looking at intellectual capability, graduate recruiters place the greatest emphasis on transferable skills such as the ability to grasp complex information (68 per cent) and to see problems from different angles (50 per cent) rather than an individual’s academic ability, where only 27 per cent saw this as very important for graduates.
Nick Griffin, head of graduate services, commented: “The graduate recruitment process is a huge undertaking and investment for any organisation. With an estimated 185,000 people set to leave college and university this summer, recruiters are faced with the challenge to hire the best graduates who will also have the potential to be future business leaders. In today’s competitive climate and in the face of the escalating war for talent, recruiters have to work harder and smarter to find their ideal candidate.”

Spelling gripe - Bad spelling tops employers’ list of CV pet hates
A recent poll from Select Appointments has revealed that misspelt words are top of the chart when it comes to employers’ pet hates.
Select, has lifted the lid on the factors most likely to irritate a potential employer when considering an applicant’s C.V.
Spelling mistakes were by far the biggest pet hate with 54 per cent of employers polled citing this as their biggest irritation. 17 per cent admitted to being annoyed by a bad layout, and 16 per cent said they are turned off if an applicant’s resume is too long.
At the other end of the scale, only 1 in 10 employers identified the use of ‘buzz words’ as a pet gripe.
Nicola Severn, spokesperson for Select, said: “Although it is obvious from the research commissioned by the Spelling Society that many individuals are not as competent at spelling as they would like to be, when constructing a CV attention to detail is vital. Basic spell check facilities are available on the vast majority of modern computers and as such there is no excuse for sloppy spelling. A CV should be seen as a chance to shine. It is a direct reflection of the applicant and if the CV is considered inaccurate or badly organised, there is a danger the applicant will be too.”

Employers left unimpressed by Lazy CV’s
Job interviewers believe that many words and phrases used regularly on CVs are lazy and unimpressive according to new research from job site TheLadders.co.uk
The company asked a panel of experts from the world of business to explain what they think many of the words used on CVs communicate. The experts’ feedback included a list of the top ten written turn-offs.
Words like ‘adventurous’ and ‘seeks a challenge’ were also given a thumbs down, suggesting candidates got bored easily and wanted to move on.
Sarah Drew, general manager of TheLadders.co.uk said: “It’s incredible how one word can communicate the wrong notion on your CV. A CV is a window to who you are and should be used as a tool to communicate what you want your potential employer to know, i.e. what an asset you would be. So spend some time getting the words right as using the wrong vocabulary can give them the wrong impression before they’ve even met you!”
“Empty words on your CV are seen as vague claims that disguise faults, what you should be doing is showcasing your achievements. Getting rid of well-known terms that employers see straight through will immediately put you ahead of the competition,” Drew added.

Social conscience
Candidates increasingly search for job role where they can ‘give something back’
While the lure of earning more money is still the greatest motivator when it comes to re-evaluating career choices, it would appear that the UK’s workforce is becoming more mindful of choosing a job that enables them to ‘give something back’ and get satisfaction from benefiting others or making a difference to an organisation or business.
In a survey commission by Lifelong Learning UK, the independent employer-led sectors skills council for the lifelong learning sector, one in five UK employees stated that their career must give them the opportunity to do something rewarding.
The poll, which marks the launch of the Make a Difference recruitment and leadership initiative, has also seen a shift in what we consider rewarding about our jobs with personal growth, career progression and development opportunities ranked as attractive when evaluating employment prospects.
Having a sense of purpose also rated highly amongst respondents with nurturing the skills of others and helping shape the future development of their organisation ranking alongside more traditional viewpoints such as working for a charity or undertaking volunteer work.
According to David Hunter, chief executive of Lifelong Learning UK, the desire to have a role which offers this doesn’t have to mean a sacrifice in salary or career development. “We’ve found that there are highly motivated and ambitious individuals for whom salary is a key influencing factor, but they also want to be in roles where they can have an impact, facilitate change and make a difference by sharing their skills with others,” he said
More men than women felt that their job had to be rewarding (almost 20 per cent versus 17.5 per cent) and those in the 26-30 years old age group (22.1 per cent) rated it as a key motivational factor when considering a career move.

Leicester based recruitment consultancy, Precision Recruitment, are this week launching a new service to give CVs more impact. The company who specialise in Engineering, Technical and Sales vacancies across Leicestershire are aware that sometimes the best candidates are let down by poor CVs that don’t show candidates in the most effective way. As a result they have joined up with Chris Rawlins from Jobscoach to help get better results for their candidates.
“We are in touch with over 100 people a week looking for a new job. Some of them have first class CVs that make it clear what they have to offer to a potential employer” comments Phil Walker, Recruitment Director at Precision. “However some CVs don’t really sell their skills and experiences which is why we have teamed up with Jobscoach, to offer jobseekers a service which may be able to help find the right job for them.”
Until recently, the region actually suffered from a shortage of suitable staff and as a result people found it relatively easy to find work in the area. At the same time, employers complained that there were not enough skilled staff to fill positions. Now the economic situation has changed and candidates are facing more challenges in locating the right job for them.
The new CV preparation service will enlist the help of expert Chris Rawlins from Jobscoach to carefully construct a CV angled to the ideal job the candidate is searching for.
“People sometimes need guidance in finding work. After all their skills are in the job they do rather than in finding work. We hope that this partnership with Precision will help many people in and around Leicester find their perfect job –even during these more difficult economic conditions” says Chris Rawlins.
Details of how the new the new service operates can be found at www.precisionrecruitment.co.uk by registering your CV or by calling 0116 254 5411 for more information.
