| 23 - 07 - 2009 | Do not be afraid to stand out from the crowd of jobseekers |
It’s a good time to… stick your head out to get noticed when job hunting. By Jonathan Krogdahl With an economy on the floor and not as many jobs today as there were yesterday, it is tough out there for the job hunter. If you are in work or not, now – more than ever before – you have to stick your head out to get noticed! As an Australian I have grown up with the “tall poppy syndrome”. This means that, if you try to rise above your peers to get noticed, the great mass you leave behind do all that they can to bring you back down to their level. |

I’ve also paid close attention to how to craft a perfect CV, and what fundamental elements are a must to heighten your chances of securing that all-important interview. This week I want to focus on interview techniques and how they’ve begun to evolve as a result of these unstable times. A survey by consultants Watson Wyatt of 200 companies from across Europe and the Middle East found 43% (52% of UK companies) have taken action to reduce permanent workers. Most have also sought to hold down pay, with more than 70% looking to reduce their budgeted pay increases in response to the current economic climate. “These are clearly sensible measures in these uncertain times but our concern is around how companies appear to be using their limited pay budgets,” said Carole Hathaway, European head of strategic reward consulting at Watson Wyatt. |

| 06 - 07 - 2009 | Revival back in the air for recession-hit firms |
A wave of optimism is surging through Leicestershire businesses for the first time in months, a survey has shown. More than half of 30 firms questioned by the Leicester Mercury said they were noticing the “green shoots of recovery”. After months of economic gloom, businesses reported a rise in exports while one had begun to re-hire people previously made redundant. All stressed they were looking to the future with “cautious optimism”. The Mercury poll comes as a new quarterly report by Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce into businesses in the county found trade has risen and jobs were safer. |
